Algorand released v5.0.0, adding Falcon-1024 post-quantum signatures and dynamic transaction fees, as ALGO fell 3.2% to $0.079268.
John Jannotti, Algorand's SVP of Protocol Engineering, detailed the upgrade, which marks a major step in the network's post-quantum security roadmap unveiled in June 2026. Node runners will now vote on the consensus upgrade, Algorand said in an Aug. 12 announcement.
The upgrade integrates Falcon-1024 post-quantum cryptography for native account authorization, replacing traditional Ed25519 signatures. Transactions using Falcon signatures incur fees equivalent to three minimum transactions because of their larger size and higher computational verification requirements. The new fee structure uses a fixed-point multiplier on the minimum fee, expressed in millionths, with ordinary transactions at 1,000,000 usage equaling one minimum fee. The free allowance includes at least 1,024 bytes of note, 2,048 bytes of application arguments, three extra program pages, and 1,000 bytes of LogicSig per transaction.
Application capacity doubles from 8 KB to 16 KB, allowing more complex smart contracts. Existing applications can upgrade to larger sizes without redeployment, and apps can share state via opt-in "family" permissions. Congestion tracking is now live with fees remaining inactive, laying groundwork for scalability under real-world load. ALGO trades at $0.079268 with a market cap of $711.91 million, down 3.23% over 24 hours.
The upgrade also raises the consensus parameter from 1,000 to 2,000, allowing up to seven extra program pages totaling 16,384 bytes. Developers are advised to use the new "simulate" API to calculate fees accurately, as traditional static fee computations no longer apply to transactions using advanced features.
Algorand's move makes it one of the first Layer-1 blockchains to offer native post-quantum resilience. The dynamic fee structure aligns with the network's broader roadmap, which includes congestion pricing mechanisms similar to Ethereum's EIP-1559. While congestion tracking is now live, the associated fees remain inactive to ensure a smooth transition for dApps.
The upgrade arrives as ALGO faces market pressures. The token has been repeatedly rejected near the $0.0818-$0.0820 resistance zone, with the key neckline at $0.0806. A breakdown through this support could open the way toward $0.0790-$0.0793, while a bounce from $0.0820 would invalidate the bearish setup.
Developers and validators are encouraged to test the new features by upgrading their nodes to version 5.0.0, now available via NodeKit and FUNC. The voting outcome will determine whether the upgrade is adopted at the consensus level.
The post-quantum security and usage-based fee model could position Algorand more competitively among Layer-1 protocols, particularly for institutions and developers prioritizing security and scalability. As node operators cast their votes, the outcome will shape whether Algorand becomes the first major L1 with native quantum-resistant accounts.
