Bitcoin whales moved $186.6 million off Kraken on Aug. 2, extending a month-long accumulation pattern that has drained exchange reserves to multi-year lows.
Bitcoin whales withdrew 2,957 BTC worth $186.6 million from Kraken on Aug. 2, pulling coins off exchange custody as the token tested support near $62,162.
Whale Alert tracked two transfers — 1,800 BTC valued at $113.56 million and 1,157 BTC worth $73.06 million — moving into unknown wallets, the on-chain monitor reported. Such withdrawals historically reflect coins leaving exchange custody, reducing immediately available trading supply rather than preparing assets for liquidation.
The latest outflow extends a broader accumulation trend. Wallets holding 1,000 to 10,000 BTC lifted their share of supply from 21.11 percent on July 23 to 21.25 percent by month-end, according to Santiment data. The larger 10,000 to 100,000 BTC cohort turned back up to 11.25 percent after bottoming near 11.19 percent on July 27. Combined, the two cohorts added roughly 40,100 BTC worth close to $2.6 billion.
Derivatives positioning leaned the same direction. Binance's top trader accounts recorded 69.33 percent long positions against 30.67 percent shorts, producing a long-to-short ratio of 2.26 over the previous 24 hours, per CoinGlass. US spot Bitcoin ETFs also turned positive, with $233.13 million in net inflows on July 30 — BlackRock's IBIT accounting for $183.4 million of the total.
The Kraken withdrawals follow a pattern of large holders moving coins to self-custody or custodial wallets after acquiring significant positions. Exchange reserves have dropped to seven-year lows as big players accumulate during the correction, according to CryptoQuant data. Bitcoin's Stock-to-Flow Ratio stood at 917.24K as of writing, while the Stock-to-Flow Reversion reached 1.6893, supporting the scarcity narrative despite recent price weakness.
Retail sentiment often follows institutional positioning during similar market phases. If spot demand strengthens alongside the bullish derivatives exposure, buying pressure could expand further. However, heavily long positioning also increases the risk of liquidations during another sharp decline.
BTC failed to preserve its recovery structure after breaking below the ascending channel that had guided price higher since late June. The rejection beneath $66,835 confirmed that sellers regained control before the breakdown accelerated. Parabolic SAR dots flipped above the daily candles, reinforcing the bearish shift, while the RSI declined to 46.23, below its signal line at 51.22.
If Bitcoin reclaims $65,799 and closes back inside the former channel, buyers could target $66,835 before challenging $70,000. However, losing $62,162 would likely strengthen bearish control and increase the probability of a decline toward the $60,000 psychological support. August carries a median return near negative 8 percent, the weakest of any month, and has closed red every year since 2022, according to historical data.
The convergence of whale accumulation, bullish derivatives positioning, and ETF inflows suggests large holders are betting against seasonal odds. Whether that marks accumulation before a bounce or a crowded bet into Bitcoin's weakest month is the wager August will settle.
