Block reported higher second-quarter revenue and raised its full-year guidance, as growth in commerce and financial solutions offset a decline in Bitcoin revenue.
The company lifted its 2026 outlook in its Aug. 5 earnings release, citing strength across its Square seller and Cash App consumer ecosystems. Management had previously guided to second-quarter gross profit of $3.04 billion, up 20 percent year over year, with adjusted operating income of $740 million and adjusted earnings per share of 86 cents.
Financial solutions, which spans Cash App Borrow and Afterpay, has become a primary growth engine. Consumer lending originations reached $17.6 billion in the first quarter, up 82 percent year over year, and lifted Financial Solutions gross profit by 55 percent. Bitcoin revenue fell in the quarter, with the company preliminarily expecting $1.8 billion in Cash App Bitcoin Ecosystem revenue and an $88.5 million remeasurement loss on its Bitcoin investment.
Shares have gained 26.1 percent year to date, outpacing peers Affirm, up 1.6 percent, and StoneCo, down more than 23 percent. Block trades at 17.97 times forward earnings, a discount to its industry's 27.32 times and its one-year median of 33.70 times.
The guidance raise follows a first-quarter report that topped expectations and prompted management to lift full-year targets for gross profit and adjusted EPS. Block is executing a restructuring announced in February that will cut more than 40 percent of its workforce, with charges estimated at $450 million to $500 million, as it leans on AI tools such as Moneybot and Managerbot to lift operating leverage.
Square has expanded beyond its small-business base, signing Ladurée Canada as its exclusive commerce platform and winning a deal with Sherwin-Williams to power payments for PRO+ customers. The unit also integrated ChatGPT and Claude into Square Online Ordering and partnered with Amazon Alexa for voice commerce.
Cash App deepened its banking and credit offerings, adding a 3.5 percent APY high-yield savings tier for Square sellers and expanding Afterpay availability. The company agreed in July to pay $45 million to settle a multi-state probe into Cash App fraud controls and marketing claims.
The guidance raise signals management expects core commerce and financial solutions growth to keep accelerating even as Bitcoin revenue remains volatile. Investors will watch the earnings call for updated segment margins and the pace of the workforce restructuring, which is expected to be substantially complete by the end of the second quarter.
