Deutsche Bundesbank has become the first institution to test ZKsync Prividium, Matter Labs' distributed-ledger platform for financial institutions, after the developer open-sourced the system's core permissioning engine on Tuesday.
"The most consistent feedback from regulated institutions was that a commercial-only core meant a single-vendor dependency they could not accept in critical infrastructure," Alex Gluchowski, chief executive at Matter Labs, said. "The ability to run, inspect and modify the code independently is a precondition for adoption, and open-sourcing the core removes that barrier structurally."
Publishing the permissioning engine as open source lets institutions run a permissioned chain from public code in their own environment, keeping smart-contract and token data inside the operator's infrastructure while zero-knowledge proofs verify correctness. The engine runs as a standalone component, so an institution can operate a chain without a commercial agreement; administration tools and integrations into existing systems remain commercial products. Other Prividium components were already public, including the ZKsync OS core, the Atlas sequencer, the Airbender prover, interoperability contracts and the block explorer.
The move lands as central banks and large financial institutions test blockchain-based settlement and tokenization. The Eurosystem is building Pontes, a system to connect market DLT platforms with Europe's TARGET payment services, with an initial launch planned for the third quarter of 2026, according to the ECB and Bundesbank. Gluchowski framed the Bundesbank deployment as a benchmark for the sector. "A central bank running public code is the clearest possible signal of where this is going. Every central bank and regulated institution on earth can now inspect and reproduce exactly what the Bundesbank is testing," he said.
The announcement does not change the role of the ZK token, Gluchowski said, noting the move only shifts which parts of Prividium's software are public code and which remain commercial products. Matter Labs said it will keep collaborating with Bundesbank on the platform's design and testing.
For the ZKsync network, the open-sourcing widens the adoption surface beyond Matter Labs' own sales pipeline: regulated banks and central banks can now audit and run the permissioning layer themselves, removing the single-vendor objection that Gluchowski said had slowed institutional uptake. The Bundesbank test gives the broader market a reference point for how a G7 central bank evaluates zero-knowledge rollup infrastructure, a template other jurisdictions could follow as Europe's Pontes settlement layer approaches its 2026 launch.
