Speculators on Kalshi expect Coinbase Global Inc. to report second-quarter trading volume below $160 billion, trailing analyst estimates as Bitcoin's price decline curbed activity on the largest US crypto exchange.
"Coinbase's trading volume has fallen for the last two quarters as bitcoin prices' fall has negatively impacted the cryptocurrency trading platform," according to the Kalshi prediction market contract, which lets users wager on the outcome.
The $160 billion threshold compares with Wall Street consensus expectations that have been tempered by two consecutive quarters of declining volumes. Bitcoin has traded in a narrow range near $64,200, failing to sustain breaks above $65,000 for more than a month, CoinGecko data shows. Coinbase is scheduled to report second-quarter earnings on July 29, with analysts forecasting EPS of $0.55 on revenue of $1.27 billion, according to Koyfin data.
A miss on trading volume would directly pressure Coinbase's transaction-based revenue, the primary driver of its earnings. COIN shares edged 0.4% higher in pre-market trade Monday, with retail sentiment on Stocktwits remaining in neutral territory.
The prediction market signal adds to headwinds for Coinbase as the broader crypto market capitalization slipped 0.9% to around $2.25 trillion. Ethereum held steady near $1,860, with retail sentiment around the leading altcoin remaining in bullish territory, Stocktwits data shows.
Competing platforms face a different trajectory. Robinhood Markets Inc. rose in pre-market trade after Bernstein raised its price target to $160 from $130, citing the company's expansion into prediction markets, perpetual futures and tokenized equities. Bernstein estimated Robinhood's prediction markets business could grow at a 64% annual rate through 2028, generating roughly $1.7 billion in revenue.
Kalshi itself has benefited from the surge in event-based trading, adding 3 million new users during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with more than $1.2 billion traded on the tournament winner contract alone. The platform's growth shows the competitive threat prediction markets pose to traditional exchanges and sportsbooks.
For Coinbase, the key question is whether a volume miss in Q2 represents a cyclical trough or a structural shift in market share toward prediction platforms and alternative exchanges. The company's earnings call on July 29 will provide the first official data point.
