Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published a revised technical roadmap on Aug. 10 that replaces the network's six-phase development plan with a three-layer architecture prioritizing quantum resistance, user privacy, and native rollups.
"Ethereum will be quantum-safe. Ethereum will put users' privacy first. Ethereum will be secure. Ethereum will be censorship-resistant. Ethereum will be highly performant and scalable while satisfying the above. And Ethereum will be Lean," Buterin said in the roadmap post.
The new "Strawmap" divides Ethereum's evolution into consensus, data, and execution layers, replacing the old framework that included the Merge, the Surge, and other phases. Verkle trees, under development for years, have been declared obsolete in favor of Poseidon binary trees designed for STARK proofs. Verifiable delay functions and certain Ethereum Virtual Machine improvement proposals have been deprioritized. New additions include quantum-resistant signatures, a structure for trading data storage space and gas costs in advance, and AI-based code verification.
The shift carries direct implications for developers and users. Native rollups integrated into the base protocol could lower transaction costs and increase throughput, while post-quantum cryptography positions Ethereum against a threat that could theoretically break elliptic curve cryptography underpinning most blockchains. ETH traded near $1,917 as of Aug. 10, according to market data. Buterin said the network could eventually support simpler execution architectures such as leanISA or RISC-V alongside the current EVM.
The roadmap's elevation of quantum security reflects growing concern that sufficiently advanced quantum computers could break the elliptic curve cryptography securing Ethereum's transactions. Buterin said the network will adopt lightweight LeanSPHINCS signatures and "zkzk" cryptographic frameworks as part of an "aggressive scaling in the context of post-quantum" strategy.
The deprioritization of verifiable delay functions and certain EVM proposals reflects a deliberate narrowing of scope. Instead of attempting to "maximally scale ALL Ethereum activity," developers are creating specialized mechanisms designed to support the heaviest loads users and applications face today, including token transfers, fast swaps, and privacy protocols.
The roadmap also introduces keyed nonces, elements of FOCIL, lean privacy pools, and a "wormhole" architecture to enable fully shielded transfers at the base layer. Buterin acknowledged that previous roadmaps critically lacked built-in privacy tools.
Ethereum's economics are being reformed as well. Short- and long-term futures for gas and blobs have been added, allowing major applications to purchase network capacity in advance at a fixed price and protecting users from sudden fee spikes. The security of this integrated architecture will depend on end-to-end formal verification of protocol specifications, a task Buterin plans to entrust to AI tools as the codebase has grown too large for manual review.
The roadmap update points to Ethereum's long-term strategic direction, potentially boosting investor confidence in the network's technological resilience and scalability. For developers building on Ethereum, the shift toward native rollups and simplified specifications could reduce complexity and improve efficiency, while users stand to gain from enhanced privacy features and a more secure network.
