Ether held $2,470 on Sept. 10 while Bitcoin fell 2.34% to $77,092.32, lifting the ETH/BTC ratio to roughly 0.0320 as 42.95 million coins — 35.21% of supply — sat locked in validators.
The divergence is visible in the flow data rather than the price chart. Spot Ether ETFs took in about $34 million on a session when Bitcoin funds posted net redemptions, extending a run that produced $1.42 billion across nine consecutive sessions from Aug. 17 to Aug. 28, according to exchange data compiled by TradingNews. The week ended Sept. 4 added $218.4 million.
"Ethereum is deriving liquidity from both speculative demand and on-chain utility, which Bitcoin structurally cannot do," said Ritika Gupta, analyst at AMBCrypto, in the research note that first flagged the divergence. "If capital keeps rotating toward ETH, the ratio has the momentum to break above 0.031."
The supply side explains why the ratio has stopped falling. Staked ETH reached an all-time high of 42.95 million coins worth $105.96 billion, or 35.21% of the 122.04 million circulating supply, per validator data. Exchange balances fell 15% between early June and mid-August. Bitmine Immersion Technologies, the largest corporate Ether treasury, holds 5,929,198 ETH — 4.9% of supply — and has staked 5,067,309 of it, roughly 85%, after buying another 28,086 coins for about $69.4 million in the week to Sept. 8.
Stablecoin issuance reinforces the same channel. Euro-denominated stablecoins minted on Ethereum rose 347.3% over three years to $848.1 million, with Ethereum hosting 69.4% of that total — more than double every other chain combined. Stablecoins on the Robinhood Chain passed $1 billion. Against that, the global stablecoin market cap grew just 0.5% in August and failed to hold above $310 billion, and Binance's stablecoin reserves have dropped nearly $7 billion from a cycle peak above $50 billion.
What is at stake is whether the ratio can hold its gains through a genuine risk-off episode rather than a single session. Bitcoin dominance at 58.57% shows how much ground remains, and the macro backdrop is hostile: the 10-year Treasury yield climbed 8 basis points to 4.90%, its highest since November 2023, and futures price a 62.2% probability of a Federal Reserve rate increase at the Sept. 15–16 meeting. Ether's native staking yield is the offset — a productive asset against a zero-yield one when the opportunity cost of holding duration is at a three-year high.
The 50-week average at $2,542 has rejected three attempts
The technical picture is tighter than the flow picture. Ether has failed at $2,550 three times since breaking a descending trendline that capped every rally from the August 2025 peak of $4,958, and the 50-week moving average sits at $2,542. The 0.618 weekly retracement at $2,438.85 is the line that decides whether the August breakout was a cycle turn or a bear-market rally. A weekly close above it keeps the 0.5 retracement at $2,919.89 — roughly 18% higher — as the next objective.
Positioning is the least comfortable part of the setup. Open interest across Ether futures reached $34.09 billion with 68.3% of accounts positioned long, roughly two longs for every short. A single whale holds a 10x long worth $102.3 million with a liquidation price of $2,241, inside the low-$2,200 support zone. Liquidation clusters sit at $2,550 above and $2,300 below, which explains both why every push toward the 50-week average has been sold and where a break would cascade.
One constructive signal sits inside the derivatives book: price has risen without equally strong growth in open interest during the recovery, suggesting spot demand rather than leverage is carrying the move. That is the healthier configuration, even with a crowded long skew.
ETF flows are concentrating in one issuer
The institutional flow is narrower than the headline streak implies. On Sept. 4, BlackRock's ETHA added 23,060 ETH and its staking fund ETHB added 6,540 ETH, while Fidelity's FETH shed 19,270 ETH — one issuer absorbing nearly three times the net total while another bled. Grayscale's ETHE has been a persistent source of redemptions since its trust conversion, and if those accelerate while ETHA inflows slow, the category's net supply effect turns negative even during an apparent inflow streak.
The structural case rests on the wrapper. Grayscale's ETHE became the first U.S. crypto exchange-traded product to distribute staking rewards to shareholders on Jan. 5, 2026, after the SEC cleared staking structures for Ether ETFs. Fidelity has filed to add staking to FETH. Every dollar into a staking fund requires buying spot ETH and locking it with a validator, pulling coins off the liquid market for the duration of the position — a second layer of buying that Bitcoin's funds do not generate.
The counterweight is depth. Bitcoin's ETF complex holds $101.3 billion in net assets against Ether's far smaller base, and Bitcoin's futures market carries $52.97 billion of open interest against Ether's $34.09 billion. Ether trades 50.1% below its August 2025 peak against Bitcoin's roughly 39% drawdown, which is the arithmetic version of the rotation argument.
For the divergence to become a rotation rather than a range, the ratio needs to hold above recent lows through a full risk-off session and ETF flows need to keep favouring Ether on Bitcoin outflow days. The Sept. 16 Fed decision is the first test. A core CPI print at or below 2.3% on Friday relieves discount-rate pressure and opens $2,800; a core reading above 2.6% breaks $2,431 and runs into the $2,300 liquidation cluster. Until one of those resolves, ETH/BTC is a trade with a thesis and no confirmation.
