Gnosis (GNO) rose 15.2% to $114 on Aug. 19 as trading volume jumped 1,725% to $15.6 million after the token broke out of its consolidation range.
Whale-tracking platform DeepBlueAlpha reported 178 whale wallets moving $6.4 million of GNO across 784 trades, mostly around $104, before the price jump.
Spot Average Order Size data from CryptoQuant showed retail-sized orders returning to the market on Aug. 18, while Spot Taker Cumulative Volume Delta reflected buyer dominance during the period. Turnover reached a monthly high of $1.4 million, according to CoinAnk, and market capitalization climbed 17% to more than $300 million, pushing GNO into CoinMarketCap's top 100.
Sustained retail and whale demand could push GNO toward the immediate resistance at $126, though the bullish setup requires a daily close above $116, the long-term moving average. A failure to close above that level, alongside increased profit-taking, could send the token back toward $104.
Whale accumulation preceded the retail wave
The rally traced a clear sequence: whales accumulated first, then retail arrived. DeepBlueAlpha observed the $6.4 million in whale trades clustering around $104, establishing that level as a demand zone before the move. GNO reached a monthly high of $141 before retracing to current levels.
Retail traders and whales had both stepped away from the market in recent sessions. Retail orders returned on Aug. 18, according to CryptoQuant's Spot Average Order Size metric, which identifies order size rather than trade direction. Spot Taker CVD confirmed buyer dominance during the same window, suggesting returning retail traders were mostly accumulating GNO rather than distributing.
Can retail demand sustain the rally?
Technical indicators support the bullish case. Strong demand pushed GNO above its short-term simple moving averages, while the MACD reflected growing upside momentum. The Relative Strength Index made a bullish crossover and rose to 67, a level that historically has preceded major upside moves when accompanied by strong demand.
The immediate test sits at $126 resistance. A daily close above $116, the long-term moving average, would confirm the bullish outlook. If GNO fails to hold above $116 and profit-taking accelerates, the token could retrace to the $104 demand zone where whales accumulated.
The question hanging over the rally is whether retail buyers inherited genuine momentum or became exit liquidity for earlier whale accumulators. With GNO's market cap now above $300 million and the token back in CoinMarketCap's top 100, the next few sessions will determine whether the breakout holds or fades.
