"Leveraged stock ETFs will continue to generate large-scale rebalancing flows and push up tech stock volatility," said Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou, strategist at JPMorgan.
The roughly 800 bullish leveraged stock ETFs tracked by Bloomberg hold about $250 billion in assets, yet account for 16 percent of daily ETF trading volume against just 1 percent of total ETF assets. Single-stock leveraged products tracking SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics, Micron Technology and SanDisk together hold nearly half of all single-stock leveraged ETF exposure. Since mid-2025, these memory-chip products have drawn more than $19 billion in net inflows, with SK Hynix-linked funds taking about $10.8 billion.
The daily rebalancing mechanism forces funds to buy or sell at closing prices to maintain target leverage, concentrating activity in the final minutes of each session. Nomura estimates that at June's peak, every 1 percent move in underlying securities required roughly $10 billion in rebalancing trades. The Korea episode shows what can happen when these flows collide with thin liquidity.
In early 2026, South Korean regulators approved more than 10 leveraged ETFs tracking Samsung and SK Hynix to retain local capital that had flowed to offshore products. Within two months, these funds attracted over $9 billion. The CSOP SK Hynix leveraged ETF listed in Hong Kong peaked near $17 billion in assets, making it the largest single-stock leveraged ETF globally. At its height, leveraged ETF trading accounted for 70 percent of Seoul's daily volume, and Kospi volatility exceeded Bitcoin's.
The episode ended with regulators raising margin requirements and suspending new product listings. These funds were not the root cause of the selloff — chip prices weakened, earnings disappointed, and borrowing costs rose — but the concentrated leverage intensified the swings. "This is how the VIX ETF blowup happened," said Peter Tchir, macro strategy head at Academy Securities. "Mechanical processes carry risk."
The mechanism works in both directions. When underlying stocks rise, bullish leveraged funds must add exposure; when they fall, they must reduce it. Inverse products can push in the same direction after rallies, creating what RBC Capital Markets derivatives strategy head Amy Wu Silverman compares to "short gamma" in options markets. "Large moves in the underlying produce follow-on effects," she said.
Not everyone sees systemic risk. Chris Murphy, co-head of derivatives strategy at Susquehanna International Group, said leveraged exposure wrapped in transparent, liquid ETFs is easier to assess than hidden leverage elsewhere. Asym Research founder Rocky Fishman said the rebalancing impact is "not economically greater than in past years," though he flagged the worst-case scenario: a major event near the close forcing concentrated rebalancing in minutes.
For leveraged ETF holders themselves, the risk is more direct. These products only deliver their promised returns within a single day. Volatility drag erodes net asset value over time even if the underlying stock returns to its starting point, while management fees compound the decay. The stakes rise further as SK Hynix prepares to list American depositary receipts on Nasdaq on July 10, giving U.S. investors direct access to a stock that already anchors the largest single-stock leveraged ETF in Hong Kong.
