A mystery Ethereum whale moved 167,855 ETH, about $408 million, to exchanges, depositing 70,739 ETH, worth $174 million, over two days after consolidating the funds from multiple wallets.
"The wallet received 167,855 ETH from multiple addresses and has been steadily routing it to exchanges," blockchain tracker Lookonchain said in a post on X.
The whale still holds 97,115 ETH, worth close to $237 million, that has not moved. The implied transfer price sits near $2,430 per coin, in line with where ether traded through late August. ETH changed hands near $2,451.09 at 08:30 UTC on Sept. 1, up 0.6 percent in 24 hours, CoinGecko data shows.
Consolidating funds from several wallets before sending them to exchanges is a common on-chain signature for an entity preparing to sell in size, though funds can also move for custody, collateral or over-the-counter settlement. If the remaining 97,115 ETH shifts to order books, it would roughly double the amount already sent toward exchanges, adding to sell-side liquidity.
The scale of the move is large even by whale-watching standards, and the pace — 70,739 ETH reaching exchanges in two days — suggests the wallet's controller is not waiting around. Old and large Ethereum positions moving toward liquidity has been a recurring theme this year, including Genesis-era wallets that left deep storage.
The deposits run against a backdrop of institutional accumulation. A wallet linked to BitMine received 20,000 ETH, about $49.4 million, from FalconX, pushing its disclosed holdings near 5.9 million ETH, roughly 4.9 percent of supply. Justin Sun completed a redemption of 5,000 ETH from Lido, with 3,500 ETH landing on Poloniex and 1,500 ETH into Morpho, a lending protocol. Fundstrat's Tom Lee told CNBC that ETH could be the standout FOMO trade into year-end if the Federal Reserve avoids a rate hike at its Sept. 15 decision.
The divergence between the whale's exchange deposits and institutional buying leaves ETH's near-term path hinging on whether the remaining balance moves. Traders tracking the wallet will treat any further deposit as confirmation of heightened sell pressure, while the Fed decision on Sept. 15 offers a potential counterweight to the supply overhang.
