Strategy is holding $4.75 billion in cash to back its preferred stock, a shift from its pure Bitcoin-accumulation model.

Strategy, the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, has built a $4.75 billion cash reserve to support preferred stock investors who prize dollar liquidity over BTC.
"Strategy initially expected investors to value Bitcoin for its liquidity and long-term appreciation, but found that institutions managing short-term capital place greater weight on cash," Chief Executive Officer Phong Le said in an interview published Aug. 10.
The reserve covers about 2.7 years of dividend payments. In response, Strategy developed STRC, a preferred stock product for investors seeking Bitcoin-linked returns with lower volatility. The company holds roughly 840,000 BTC, equal to about 4 percent of Bitcoin's 21 million maximum supply. Its legacy software business remains: software revenue rose 7 percent from a year earlier and cloud subscriptions climbed 54 percent, with about 1,500 employees supporting the Bitcoin operation.
Le said Strategy wants to become the "central bank" of Bitcoin and the "JPMorgan of digital finance," building a platform on which other businesses construct financial services — a structure he compared to Apple's iPhone network. DeFi could broaden that network and provide another channel for capital to flow into Bitcoin, he added.
The cash build reflects a recalibration of Strategy's capital structure. Le said the company initially believed investors would place a high value on Bitcoin because of its liquidity and long-term price appreciation. It later found that institutions and investors managing short-term capital place greater importance on cash. The preferred stock products, including STRC, need to work properly to support MSTR and the broader Bitcoin strategy, even as Strategy keeps its Bitcoin exposure, he said.
Strategy's long-term ambition extends beyond its treasury. Le said the company has become both a leading market indicator and Bitcoin's central bank, and that it would face the volatility and scrutiny that come with that role head-on. The company plans to keep its legacy software business as it builds out the digital finance platform.
The pivot by the largest corporate Bitcoin holder could reshape how institutions view Bitcoin-linked equity and preferred products. If STRC and similar instruments attract income-focused capital, they may broaden the investor base for Bitcoin exposure beyond spot ETFs and direct holdings — while the cash cushion shows that even the most committed BTC treasury now answers to traditional liquidity demands.
