Strategy Inc. shares rose more than 12% on Thursday as Bitcoin broke above $80,000, lifting the largest corporate holder of the cryptocurrency.
Coinbase Chief Executive Brian Armstrong said on Aug. 20 there was a "good chance" Bitcoin could return above $100,000 this year, pointing to the Trump administration's push for the CLARITY Act after a White House meeting with crypto executives.
Bitcoin traded at $80,600 as of 12:49 p.m. EDT, up from overnight lows near $78,200, according to CoinGecko data, after topping the $80,000 threshold for the second time this week. Strategy, which holds 840,447 Bitcoin, raised $2.01 billion selling shares last week and created a $1.59 billion cash pool it said may be spent on the token. The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.5% and the S&P 500 gained 0.81%.
Bitcoin's move above $80,000 comes as investors await Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at the Jackson Hole conference on Friday, which could clarify the path for interest rates.
Crypto-linked equities ride the rebound
The rally extended across Bitcoin-exposed stocks. Miner MARA Holdings rose 15.44% to $11.15 on Aug. 20, while Riot Platforms gained 8.36% and CleanSpark added 7.97%, according to TheStreet data. Coinbase climbed 7.75% to $172.35 the same day. Strategy's move tracked Bitcoin's rebound closely, with the company's shares particularly sensitive to changes in the token's price because of its outsized holdings.
Institutional demand has strengthened alongside prices. U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded about $517 million in net inflows on Aug. 19, their third consecutive day of positive flows, according to TheStreet. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index turned to 63, or "Greed," from 46, or "Fear," a day earlier.
Bitcoin's breakout above $80,000 follows a blockbuster earnings report from Nvidia that lifted the broader tech sector. The token's next test comes at the Jackson Hole symposium, where Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's remarks could set the tone for risk assets. Support sits at the overnight low of $78,200, with the $80,000 level now acting as a new floor.
For Strategy, the stakes are direct: the company's 840,447-token treasury, worth roughly $67.7 billion at current prices, makes its stock a leveraged bet on Bitcoin. A sustained rally above $80,000 would add billions to the value of its holdings, while a pullback would magnify losses for the proxy.
