The XRP Ledger has crossed 1 million machine-to-machine payments initiated by AI agents, according to Kamilah Stevenson, a wealth-focused market analyst who said the milestone shows automated software is already settling low-value transactions on blockchain rails.
"Machines are paying each other right now on the ledger," Stevenson said, describing the payments as settling within seconds without a person approving each transaction. She contrasted that with conventional payment systems, which depend on card details, billing addresses, human authorization, and slower settlement processes.
On-chain analytics showed the XRP Ledger had surpassed 1.4 million transactions initiated by AI agents as of July 22, according to CryptoPotato. Ripple launched the XRPL AI Starter Kit in June, adding support for X402-powered payments using XRP and Ripple USD (RLUSD), enabling agents to transact for APIs, compute, and other digital services.
The milestone matters because autonomous AI systems increasingly need to purchase computing power, data, and digital services on their own, a model that requires fast, automated, and cheap settlement for transactions worth fractions of a cent. Stevenson argued adoption should be judged by activity rather than partnership announcements or institutional speculation. "This is not potential. This is usage," she said, adding that recurring machine demand could prove more durable than market interest driven by price cycles.
A machine-payment use case, not an institutional promise
The XRP Ledger's AI payments now support Mastercard's Verifiable Intent standard, which creates a tamper-resistant record of what a user authorized when an agent acts on their behalf, and align with Google's Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) and Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Ripple has joined the Linux Foundation's x402 Foundation alongside Visa, Mastercard, Google, Amazon Web Services, and 35 other organizations to build an open payment standard for AI agents and internet applications.
RLUSD enters agentic payments
Chandler Fang, cofounder of t54ai, a company building an agentic economy on the XRP Ledger, said RLUSD natively supports x402 and mainstream agentic protocols from Google and Mastercard, giving it the potential to unlock hundreds of agentic merchants and services. RLUSD finds a use case in agentic payments because many workflows need price stability for invoice settlement, payroll, and agent-to-agent commerce. The stablecoin's market capitalization reached $1.6 billion on Aug. 1, and it launched on South Korea's four largest exchanges — Upbit, Bithumb, Korbit, and Coinone. Nuvion, an AI-powered cross-border payments platform, integrated RLUSD into its infrastructure in July.
The competitive field remains broad. Stablecoins, traditional payment APIs, layer-2 networks, and other blockchain payment systems are also targeting programmable commerce. A million transactions would not by itself establish sustained economic demand for XRP or prove the XRP Ledger will become a dominant AI payment rail, but the recurring machine demand Stevenson describes gives the network a practical use case beyond trading and remittances.
