Key Takeaways:

BlackRock's crypto ETFs flipped from a $13.9 billion creation boom to a $3.5 billion redemption-led contraction in the second quarter, a $17.4 billion swing that marks a turning point for institutional Bitcoin demand.
BlackRock's Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs swung to a $3.5 billion net decrease in Q2 capital-share transactions, reversing a $13.9 billion increase a year earlier.
The Aug. 6 filings for the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) and iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA) show the $17.4 billion year-over-year swing, a measure of trust-level share creation and redemption activity, according to the documents.
IBIT recorded $4.3 billion of contributions for shares issued and $7.2 billion of distributions for shares redeemed during the three months ended June 30, producing a $2.9 billion net decrease. ETHA posted $943.3 million in contributions and $1.5 billion in distributions, a $583.4 million contraction. IBIT's operations reduced net assets by more than $7 billion in the quarter, while ETHA's cut them by $1.5 billion, including net realized losses and unrealized depreciation at the trust level.
The reversal signals a shift in institutional behavior after the near-automatic accumulation that followed the spot ETF launches. Early August inflows offer a limited counterweight: IBIT captured $478.5 million and ETHA drew $83.8 million across Aug. 3-5, covering just 15.9 percent of the Q2 outflow.
The activity tables placed 106,148 BTC and 770,839 ETH in rows labeled as assets sold for share redemptions. Footnotes say those rows include in-kind distributions valued at $3.85 billion of Bitcoin and $904 million of Ethereum, without disclosing the unit-level split. Since 2025, authorized participants can receive bitcoins directly when IBIT shares are canceled, so not all of the token volume was sold for dollars on an exchange. The filings do not identify who initiated the underlying redemptions.
As of Aug. 6, Farside Investors' latest completed Bitcoin ETF row showed a $196.8 million IBIT inflow on Aug. 5, while its Ethereum ETF table showed $50.3 million for ETHA. The combined $562.3 million across the three sessions equals 15.9 percent of the $3.5 billion Q2 contraction. If August sustains the same $187.4 million combined daily average, it would take about 19 trading sessions for BlackRock's funds to accumulate a similar amount. Persistence over weeks, not a handful of positive days, is the more meaningful test.
Bitcoin traded near $64,000 as of Aug. 6, with whales holding 10 to 10,000 BTC adding more than 20,000 tokens worth $1.2 billion since July 29, Santiment data shows. A sustained redemption cycle would remove the automatic accumulation that underpinned the post-launch rally, while consistent inflows over several weeks would confirm institutional demand is rebuilding.
