Demis Hassabis steps back from Google DeepMind leadership to focus on AGI as four senior researchers depart.
Google DeepMind is entering a new era as co-founder Demis Hassabis hands day-to-day control to Koray Kavukcuoglu, with four senior researchers departing and its next Gemini model unreleased.
"[Hassabis] and I have been long discussing a role that allows him to put his full attention on actively shaping the future of AGI," Alphabet Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said in a companywide memo. "It's work that is vitally important to Alphabet and humanity."
Hassabis becomes Alphabet's first chief scientist and chairman of Google DeepMind, while Kavukcuoglu, who has spent more than 13 years at the lab and served as its chief technology officer since January 2024, takes over as senior vice president. Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le — four of Google's most prominent AI and engineering leaders — have left to launch Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on machine learning, science and engineering, with Google as a founding investor and cloud partner.
Alphabet shares fell about 4 percent following the announcement as investors weigh whether the leadership churn and delayed Gemini 4 release signal lost momentum to OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have hired prominent former Google researchers in recent months. The Gemini app has reached 950 million monthly users and Gemma open models have surpassed 900 million downloads, while the next flagship model, originally expected in June, has yet to ship.
Hassabis, who co-founded DeepMind in 2010 and led the London-based lab after Google acquired it for about $650 million in 2014, said the rapid pace of progress toward AGI made now the right time to hand over operational duties. "I've been working towards AGI my whole life and now, like many of you, I feel it is close at hand," he wrote to employees. He will continue to lead Isomorphic Labs, the AI drug-discovery company spun out of DeepMind, and work with Pichai on strategic AGI matters from the lab's Platform 37 offices in London.
The transition removes Hassabis from daily operational responsibilities but keeps him closely involved in the organization. He will advise Kavukcuoglu and DeepMind's teams across models and research, with responsibility for the Gemini models already resting with the new SVP and other leads "for a while," Hassabis said. Pichai credited Kavukcuoglu with establishing DeepMind's deep learning team and contributing to work including WaveNet and DQN, the reinforcement learning algorithm behind early Atari-playing agents.
The two research units that now form Google DeepMind were merged in 2023, after the launch of ChatGPT prompted Google to combine DeepMind and Google Brain under a single organization. Dean, who founded Google Brain in 2011, became chief scientist of the combined unit, while Hassabis took the CEO role. Together, the teams produced breakthroughs including AlphaGo, AlphaFold, Transformers and the TensorFlow and JAX machine learning frameworks.
The departures of Dean, Ghemawat, Vinyals and Le follow a steady outflow of senior AI talent from Google. Noam Shazeer joined OpenAI in June, while Nobel laureate John Jumper, who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Hassabis, moved to Anthropic the same month. Mustafa Suleyman left earlier for other ventures before returning to the broader AI industry.
The reshuffle comes as Google faces mounting competition from OpenAI, Anthropic and lower-cost open-source models from Chinese developers. At its developer conference in May, executives highlighted Gemini's cost efficiency rather than claiming it led the field in performance. The company's next flagship Gemini 4 model, which Pichai referenced in his memo, has no confirmed release date.
For investors, the question is whether Kavukcuoglu can accelerate product execution and commercialization of the Gemini platform. Pichai said the models are in high demand among developers and businesses, and the cybersecurity-focused Cyber model is now live. Alphabet shares, which fell about 4 percent on the announcement, trade at a premium to peers as the market prices in continued AI leadership — a bet that now rests on a new leadership team.
