Nvidia's SIGGRAPH keynote cemented AI as the core of graphics rendering, not an add-on.
Nvidia Corp. used its SIGGRAPH 2026 research keynote to unveil DLSS 5, a new generation of its AI-powered rendering technology, alongside updates to the Cosmos world foundation model platform that extend the company's push into physical AI and simulation.
"AI is no longer a separate track in computer graphics — it is the rendering pipeline," Neil Ashton, director of AI physics at Nvidia, said during the Monday keynote at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
DLSS 5 builds on a technology suite that already generates up to seven out of every eight screen pixels through neural networks rather than traditional rasterization, enabling rendering speeds as much as 530% faster than conventional methods at equivalent resolutions, according to Nvidia's published specifications. The Cosmos platform, whose third-generation model launched June 1 at GTC Taipei, uses a mixture-of-transformers architecture to unify vision reasoning, world generation and action prediction in a single system capable of generating text, images, video, ambient sound and physical actions.
The announcements reinforce Nvidia's dominance across two markets: gaming GPUs, where DLSS has become a competitive moat against Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Intel Corp., and physical AI simulation, where Cosmos targets a market that Nvidia estimates will require hundreds of billions of dollars in infrastructure investment over the next decade.
The SIGGRAPH keynote, delivered Monday at 3:45 PM PDT, featured three Nvidia researchers spanning the company's technology stack. Ashton focused on AI physics and agentic AI for computational engineering. Ming-Yu Liu, an IEEE Fellow who leads the Nvidia Cosmos Lab, presented the world model platform's roadmap. Edward Liu, director of applied deep learning research, detailed the DLSS 5 architecture.
DLSS 5 arrives as the gaming GPU market undergoes its most significant architectural shift in two decades. Nvidia's current Ada Lovelace architecture already allocates substantial die area to tensor cores for low-precision matrix multiplication — the mathematical operation at the heart of neural rendering. DLSS 5 extends this approach, reducing the number of pixels that must be rasterized conventionally and relying on the neural network to reconstruct the final image. The technique has become a deciding factor for PC gamers choosing between Nvidia, AMD and Intel GPUs, with Nvidia commanding roughly 88% of the discrete GPU market, according to Jon Peddie Research.
Cosmos 3 Targets Physical AI's $100 Billion Opportunity
The Cosmos platform update addresses a different market entirely. Physical AI — systems that perceive, reason about and act within the physical world — requires simulation environments for training and evaluation. Cosmos 3, built on a mixture-of-transformers design, can generate text, images, video, ambient sound and physical actions from a single model, compressing training cycles that once took months into days, Nvidia said. The platform competes with simulation tools from Google DeepMind and Meta Platforms Inc., though Nvidia's advantage lies in its vertically integrated hardware-software stack: Cosmos runs on Nvidia GPUs using Nvidia's CUDA software layer, creating switching costs for developers who build on the platform.
Nvidia shares, trading at roughly 35 times forward earnings, have gained more than 140% over the past 12 months as the company's data center revenue has surpassed its gaming segment. The SIGGRAPH announcements reinforce the bull case: DLSS 5 extends Nvidia's gaming GPU pricing power, while Cosmos opens a new addressable market in physical AI simulation. Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore, who rates Nvidia overweight with a $165 price target, has called the physical AI opportunity "the next $100 billion TAM" for the company. The risk, as Bolt Graphics and other challengers demonstrated at SIGGRAPH with alternative GPU architectures, is that Nvidia's dominance invites competition from chips designed specifically for path tracing rather than AI-assisted rendering.
