Kai-Fu Lee's AI startup 01.ai pivots from building frontier models to customizing open-weight AI, advancing a pre-IPO round ahead of a planned 2027 Hong Kong listing.
01.ai, the mainland AI startup founded by venture capitalist and computer scientist Kai-Fu Lee, is advancing a pre-IPO financing round ahead of a planned 2027 listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, according to people familiar with the matter.
"We aim to complete the financing round around the time 01.ai releases its first annual results," Lee, the company's founder and former head of Google's China operations, said, without disclosing the fundraising target or potential investors.
The company, valued at over USD1 billion with backing from Alibaba Cloud, is unwinding its offshore holding structure — a prerequisite for smoother overseas listing procedures. Founded in 2023, 01.ai now employs about 240 people, lean by industry standards.
The business reset means 01.ai no longer competes with DeepSeek or Alibaba's Qwen on foundational model performance. Instead, it fine-tunes existing Chinese open-weight models — including DeepSeek, Alibaba's Qwen, and Z.AI's GLM — wraps them in data-organizing software and deploys AI agents for enterprise customers. The shift reflects how DeepSeek's release of open weights disrupted the economics of training proprietary AI models, forcing startups to find revenue elsewhere.
The pre-IPO financing will fund research and support the costly infrastructure required for AI services, Lee said. Hong Kong has emerged as a preferred listing destination for Chinese AI companies seeking access to international capital while maintaining proximity to the mainland market.
For investors, the question is whether 01.ai's pivot to a services-oriented model can generate sustainable revenue in a market where enterprises are still experimenting with AI adoption. The company's lean headcount of 240 employees — compared to thousands at competitors like Baidu and Alibaba — suggests a capital-efficient approach, but also limits the scale at which it can deploy customized solutions across multiple enterprise clients. 01.ai's valuation of over USD1 billion, achieved with Alibaba Cloud's backing, will face renewed scrutiny as the company opens its books to pre-IPO investors.
