(P1) The wife of The Sandbox co-founder Sébastien Borget was the target of a failed kidnapping attempt by six men at their home in northern France, the latest in a string of over 40 such attacks in the country this year. The attempt was thwarted when neighbors intervened, leading to the arrest of two teenage suspects.
(P2) "Thank you for the outpouring of love, thoughtful messages, and deeply caring words for my family," Borget said in a tweet following the incident, expressing gratitude for the support he received.
(P3) According to a report from Le Journal du Dimanche, one attacker posed as a delivery driver to gain access to the property before five accomplices rushed in. While four escaped by car, two teenagers, aged 14 and 15, were apprehended by police after attempting to flee in an Uber. They were allegedly in possession of a replica handgun, zip-tie restraints, and balaclavas.
(P4) This event highlights the escalating trend of "wrench attacks"—physical assaults and kidnappings to extort cryptocurrency—in France. The nation has seen 135 such incidents since 2023, accounting for nearly 80% of all European cases and prompting French authorities to charge 88 individuals across 12 ongoing investigations.
France Grapples With Surge in Crypto-Related Violent Crime
The attempted abduction is one of 41 crypto-linked kidnapping attempts recorded by French authorities since the beginning of the year. The surge has led to heightened security concerns among blockchain executives and a robust response from the French government.
Web3 security firm CertiK noted in a recent report that Europe has become a hotspot for these attacks, which are often carried out by "complete amateurs" recruited through messaging apps, while the masterminds operate from abroad. This aligns with the profile of the two arrested suspects, who are both from Pantin, a suburb of Paris.
The incident follows several other high-profile crypto-targeted crimes in France, including a home invasion targeting the CEO of Binance France and the kidnapping of a magistrate for a crypto ransom. In response, Minister Delegate Jean-Didier Berger has unveiled new preventive measures, including a dedicated prevention platform and enhanced security for select cryptocurrency entrepreneurs and their families.
