Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has become the largest single political donor in the 2026 US midterm election cycle, with disclosed federal donations now exceeding $115 million as it seeks to shape cryptocurrency regulation.
"Blockchain is the future," Maryland state lawmaker Adrian Boafo wrote in a 2025 social media post promoting a bill to advance the state's digital-asset sector. Boafo, now a congressional candidate, has become a key recipient of the industry's spending, illustrating the crypto lobby's strategy of targeted political investment.
The spending from a16z surpasses that of other major donors like George Soros and is part of a broader, well-funded push by the digital asset industry to elect favorable lawmakers. The Fairshake PAC network, a key recipient of funds from a16z and others like Coinbase, has raised over $193 million for the 2026 cycle and already spent $133 million in the 2024 elections, according to Federal Election Commission records.
This financial influence aims to create a more favorable regulatory environment in the US, potentially reducing uncertainty and fostering growth for digital assets. With Democrats holding a slim majority in the House and only 18 districts rated as toss-ups by the Cook Political Report, every seat is critical, amplifying the impact of this targeted spending ahead of the July primaries.
Crypto Cash Targets Safe Seats
A significant portion of the spending is being deployed in Democratic primaries for seats considered safely blue. In Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District, the Protect Progress super PAC, an affiliate of the Fairshake network, has spent over $300,000 to support Adrian Boafo. This includes $240,000 on advertising and $60,000 on direct mailers.
Boafo, who has been endorsed by retiring Rep. Steny Hoyer (D), has worked as a lobbyist for tech firm Oracle while also serving as a state lawmaker. During his time in the Maryland General Assembly, he introduced and passed a bill to create a task force for advancing blockchain technology in the state. His campaign has also received support from figures within the Democratic establishment, including a contribution from the executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
