V4 Deploys After Contentious On-Chain Vote
Aave has launched its V4 protocol on the Ethereum mainnet, concluding a complex governance process that underscored recent tensions within its community. While an initial off-chain Snapshot vote signaled near-unanimous support with over 645,000 votes in favor, the final binding on-chain proposal proved more divisive. The Aave Improvement Proposal (AIP) ultimately passed with approximately 60% of votes in favor (433,000) versus 40% opposed (282,000).
The deployment marks a significant milestone, demonstrating the protocol's ability to execute major upgrades despite a period of internal friction. This period saw the departure of key technical contributors BGD Labs in February and governance delegate Aave Chan Initiative in March, both citing disagreements over the protocol's direction and governance standards.
Hub-and-Spoke Model Attracts Over $300M
The core of V4 is a new "hub-and-spoke" architecture designed to concentrate capital and improve efficiency. This model uses central "Hubs" for shared liquidity while separate "Spokes" function as distinct borrowing environments with their own tailored risk parameters. The structure aims to prevent the liquidity fragmentation that often plagues DeFi protocols, creating deeper, more unified capital pools.
This new design is already attracting significant capital through innovative strategies. Protocols like Cian and KelpDAO have supplied over $300 million in fresh liquidity by enabling looping and Liquid Staking Token (LST) strategies. Cian alone has drawn approximately $200 million in total value locked by automating incentive-driven borrowing and lending cycles on the platform.
Aave Integration Pushes Mantle TVL to $755M
The potential ecosystem impact of an Aave upgrade is clearly demonstrated by its recent deployment on the Mantle network. Following Aave's integration, Mantle's Total Value Locked (TVL) swelled from $254 million to $755 million, bringing the network to within 1.9% of its all-time high. This rapid growth highlights Aave’s powerful influence in attracting capital and stimulating on-chain activity.
The performance positions Mantle as one of the market's fastest-expanding networks, in contrast to larger blockchains like Ethereum and Solana, which remain roughly 50% below their peak TVL figures. Aave's ability to act as a capital magnet provides a strong precedent for the growth potential unlocked by V4's new capabilities on Ethereum.
