Binance launched its Binance x402 payment facilitator on May 19, 2026, introducing a system for programmable, HTTP-native payments on BNB Chain designed for the growing economy of AI agents and automated software. The move aims to create payment infrastructure for machine-driven commerce, where software may need to pay for API calls, data access, or other services on demand without human intervention.
"AI agents and automated software workflows need a payment model that fits how modern internet services are consumed,” said Thomas Gregory, VP of Payments and Fiat at Binance. “Binance x402 gives developers a standard way to monetize digital services on BNB Chain through HTTP-native payment flows, while allowing users to authorize payments through their own wallets and stay in control.”
Instead of human-driven checkout flows, Binance x402 allows services to request payment through a standard HTTP 402 “Payment Required” error code, which an AI agent can then pay automatically to gain access. At launch, the system integrates with Trust Wallet through its AgentKit, allowing users to authorize agent payments while keeping private keys on their own device.
The move positions BNB Chain as key infrastructure for the emerging "agentic economy." It follows a broader industry trend, with the x402 standard—originally developed by Coinbase—also seeing experimental adoption on Solana, according to a Q1 2026 report from Messari. Binance's ecosystem commitment is further shown by its venture arm, YZi Labs, leading an $8 million round for AEON, another company building an x402-based settlement layer on BNB Chain.
How x402 Bridges Web Standards and On-Chain Payments
The protocol supports on-chain settlement using several stablecoins on BNB Chain, including USDC, USDT, U, and USD1. By combining off-chain authorization with on-chain settlement, the system aims to provide a scalable, low-cost payment rail for the high-frequency, small-value transactions typical of machine-to-machine commerce. Development is also underway to integrate Binance Wallet’s Agentic Wallet, according to the company.
