A $120 million USDC withdrawal by institutional custodian Ceffu from Ethena's custody wallets has put the off-exchange settlement rails behind USDe's backing under scrutiny.
Institutional custodian Ceffu withdrew $120 million in USDC from Ethena's Coinbase Prime custody wallets across six transactions on Aug. 24, according to Onchain Lens, raising questions about the collateral behind the $4.46 billion USDe stablecoin.
"Ceffu withdrew 120M USDC from Ethena's Coinbase Prime Custody wallets across 6 transactions over the past day," Onchain Lens said in an Aug. 24 post on X, adding that the latest 30 million USDC leg moved about six hours earlier from wallet 0x0066...1049. Neither Ceffu nor Ethena has publicly commented, and the destination of the funds has not been confirmed.
Ceffu is one of three off-exchange settlement providers Ethena uses alongside Copper and Fireblocks, holding collateral without beneficial ownership, per Ethena's documentation. The protocol says assets are "never held in control or beneficially owned" by the settlement provider and that a disruption to one provider's availability should not affect the value of USDe's backing. Against Ethena's scale, the $120 million is small: a June 2026 governance update from risk firm LlamaRisk put USDe supply at roughly $4.46 billion with a backing ratio above 101 percent, and described Coinbase as Ethena's primary custodian and perpetuals venue across more than $5 billion in assets.
The episode lands as institutional investors place more weight on regulated custody. In a Coinbase and EY-Parthenon survey of 351 institutional investors conducted in January 2026, 66 percent cited regulatory compliance as a key factor when choosing a custodian, up from 25 percent a year earlier. Ceffu, Binance's only institutional custody partner, secured a full Virtual Asset Service Provider license from Dubai's VARA in October 2025, and OSL Group said this month that Ceffu added support for its regulated stablecoin USDGO.
Ethena's own workflow describes delegating and undelegating collateral from trading venues as routine operations carried out without delay or additional cost, which suggests a transfer of this size could fit within normal collateral reallocation rather than stress. But the absence of public explanation leaves the framework that sustains off-exchange settlement partly opaque.
What the reported transfer shows is that the size matters less than the fact that it demonstrates the custody layer institutional crypto relies on while it is being shifted — and at a level that remains obscure until Ceffu or Ethena clarifies the intent. For USDe holders, the peg and backing ratio remain the operative signals; the $120 million move, at roughly 2.7 percent of supply, does not by itself threaten the 101 percent backing ratio reported for June.
