"China's intelligent robotics industry is scaling at an accelerated pace, with quadruped robots alone accounting for nearly 70 percent of global sales volume," the MIIT said in its semi-annual industry report published Monday.
The robotics data was part of a broader industrial update showing China's technology sectors gaining international competitive advantages. AI technology adoption among enterprises above a designated size surpassed 30 percent in the first half, while open-source AI large models accumulated more than 10 billion downloads globally. By the end of June, China had built 5.1 million 5G base stations and 32.9 million 10G-PON ports supporting gigabit broadband access, the ministry said.
The milestone positions China as the dominant supplier of humanoid robotics hardware for global factories, warehouses and service industries — a market that could reach hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade. The country has also produced a number of global unicorn companies in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, new energy and biopharmaceuticals, actively contributing to international standards development, according to the MIIT.
Quadruped Robots Lead Global Sales
Chinese-developed quadruped robots have become the dominant category in global sales, accounting for nearly 70 percent of units sold worldwide in the first half. These four-legged machines, used primarily for industrial inspection, security patrols and research, have found buyers across Asia, Europe and North America. The sales data suggests Chinese manufacturers have achieved cost advantages and production scale that competitors in the US, Europe and Japan have yet to match.
The humanoid robot category, while earlier in its commercial lifecycle, has attracted the most development activity. More than 400 distinct models have been created by Chinese companies, ranging from full-size bipedal workers designed for factory assembly lines to smaller service robots intended for hospitality and healthcare settings. The number of models indicates a fragmented but fast-moving market where multiple design approaches are competing for dominance.
AI Infrastructure Expands Alongside Robotics
The robotics push is supported by a parallel expansion of China's AI and telecommunications infrastructure. AI technology adoption among large enterprises has passed the 30 percent penetration threshold, while open-source AI models from Chinese developers have been downloaded more than 10 billion times globally, the MIIT said.
China's 5G network now includes 5.1 million base stations, and authorities are accelerating the commercial rollout of 5G-Advanced networks while piloting 10-gigabit fiber broadband in residential compounds and industrial parks. The telecom sector has also opened further to foreign investment through pilot programs, with 3,219 foreign-invested telecom enterprises operating in the country — a 23.9 percent increase from a year earlier.
Overall industrial production grew 5.4 percent year on year in the first half, with 32 of 41 major industrial categories recording expansion. The operating revenue profit margin of large industrial firms reached 5.66 percent in the first five months, the highest cumulative level since 2024, as global demand for AI and green low-carbon industrial products remained strong, the MIIT said.
For investors, China's robotics dominance creates both opportunity and competitive pressure. Companies along the robotics supply chain — sensor manufacturers, motor producers, AI chip designers and battery suppliers — stand to benefit from rising domestic and export demand. Global robotics firms, including Boston Dynamics, Tesla and Japan's Fanuc, face a Chinese competitor base that is both numerous and cost-competitive. Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot competes directly with dozens of Chinese models at potentially higher price points.
The broader industrial data suggests China's manufacturing upgrade is proceeding alongside its AI buildout, creating a self-reinforcing cycle: more robots generate more training data for AI models, which in turn improve robot capabilities. Investors tracking the robotics theme should monitor export data for Chinese robotics products, as well as capacity expansion announcements from Chinese manufacturers, for signs of accelerating global market share gains.
