An optical communications company whose shares have surged 114% this year landed multibillion-dollar fiber optic agreements with Nvidia Corp. and Amazon.com Inc., as hyperscalers race to build the physical backbone for AI data centers. The deals cover optical interconnect technology that moves data between tens of thousands of GPUs in AI clusters.
First-quarter optical communications sales rose 36 percent year over year, the company reported, driven by demand from cloud providers and AI companies expanding their data center footprints. The multibillion-dollar agreements with Nvidia and Amazon span multiple years and cover fiber optic connectivity solutions for next-generation AI infrastructure.
The contracts underscore a shift in how hyperscalers are spending their AI budgets. While Nvidia's H100 and Blackwell GPUs have dominated headlines, the optical networking layer connecting those chips has become a bottleneck as clusters scale to hundreds of thousands of accelerators. The Nvidia and Amazon deals validate a thesis that the physical layer of AI — the cables, transceivers, and switches moving data between compute nodes — is as strategic as the silicon.
