GameStop held $5 billion in cash and nearly $5 billion in eBay stock as of August 1, per preliminary Q2 2026 results posted on its investor relations website.
The disclosure marks a shift from GameStop's earlier attempts to acquire eBay outright, a pursuit that prompted Michael Burry of Scion Asset Management to exit his position in May 2026. CEO Ryan Cohen has continued to express interest in the online marketplace despite repeated rejections from eBay's board.
GameStop also disclosed roughly $3 billion in debt, with $358 million in convertible notes being exchanged. Following the exchange, approximately $1.1 billion of 2030 Notes and $1.7 billion of 2032 Notes, or about $2.8 billion in aggregate, will remain outstanding, according to the company's press release.
The company expects lower quarterly sales from store closures and its exit from France. GameStop has been shrinking its physical footprint while pivoting toward digital commerce, and the eBay stake gives it a significant foothold in that space.
The $55.5 billion swing in GameStop's eBay position rattled the stock, according to a Seeking Alpha analysis. Strip out cash, the eBay stake, and remaining debt, and the market is implicitly valuing GameStop's core business at only about $2.5 billion — roughly five times a $500 million normalized EBIT case, the analysis said.
GameStop's operating profits are climbing even as revenue keeps shrinking, the analysis noted. The 55.5 million-share exchange finally puts a number on what had been an open-ended overhang for the stock.
The company's preliminary results did not disclose full revenue or earnings per share figures, nor did it provide consensus comparisons. GameStop said it will provide complete Q2 results in its formal filing.
The eBay investment transforms GameStop from a video game retailer into a significant shareholder of one of the world's largest online marketplaces. The stake gives GameStop exposure to eBay's gross merchandise volume and marketplace economics without the operational burden of running a marketplace.
Investors will watch for further details in the full Q2 filing and any updates on GameStop's eBay stake strategy. The company's next catalyst is the formal earnings release, which will include complete revenue and profit figures.
