The Libra Trust is preparing to grant nearly $110 million to 71 Argentine companies, using funds from the controversial and now-defunct Libra token project. The move comes more than a year after the token's collapse left many investors with losses.
"The timing of the distributions will depend on the promptness with which funding applicants respond to the questions that will be sent in the coming days," the Trust stated, indicating that grants will begin being delivered before November.
The funds were transferred to the trust on November 22 by Hayden Davis, the CEO of Kelsier Ventures and a central figure in the Libra token project. This transfer is seen as a strategic move to counter scam allegations made against Davis in an ongoing lawsuit. The trust has received 71 applications from local companies seeking grants to support their growth.
This distribution aims to fulfill the token's original, stated purpose of supporting local enterprises while also addressing the project's troubled legacy. The trust has also created a mechanism for compensating Argentine nationals who suffered losses from the Libra token, provided they file a claim before November 22, 2025. The total amount that will be allocated to victim compensation remains uncertain.
Trust Formation and Fund Distribution
The establishment of the Libra Trust marks a pivotal chapter in a saga that involved endorsements from Argentine President Javier Milei. The trust's primary role is to manage the nearly $110 million in proceeds from the original token sale and channel them toward their intended purpose.
According to a statement, the trust will vet the 71 applications for feasibility before any funds are disbursed. "Financing decisions will be made based on the needs of the selected applicants," the trust explained. "The trust funds will be managed prudently to enable the financing of strong applications that merit support."
A Path for Victim Compensation
In a significant development, the trust has also acknowledged the investors harmed by the token's failure. It has opened a window for Argentine nationals to apply for compensation for losses related to their investment in the Libra token.
However, this process is subject to a strict deadline, with all claims needing to be filed by November 22, 2025. Details on the total funds available for this compensation pool have not been disclosed, leaving the extent of potential restitution for victims unclear.
