Lumentum's $2 billion NVIDIA investment and new US photonics fab put it at the center of the AI optical interconnect buildout.

Lumentum Holdings is expanding its AI optical networking portfolio across OCS, CPO, and NPO technologies, backed by a $2 billion NVIDIA investment, as hyperscale data center demand for 800G and 1.6T interconnects accelerates.
"Hyperscale AI infrastructure is the primary demand engine," the BCC Research report on the AI impact on the optical transceiver market said. "GPU-intensive AI training clusters require high-bandwidth, low-latency optical interconnects operating at 400 Gbps, 800 Gbps, and 1.6 Tbps."
NVIDIA committed the $2 billion strategic investment in Lumentum in March 2026, including a multi-billion-dollar purchase commitment and future capacity access rights for advanced laser components covering co-packaged optics platforms. Lumentum plans a new US-based fabrication facility focused on 800 Gbps and 1.6 Tbps interconnects. The company reported Q4 FY26 revenue of $1.006 billion, up 109.3 percent year over year.
Lumentum's market cap stands at roughly $80 billion, and the company's narrative projects $12.7 billion revenue and $4.4 billion earnings by 2029, requiring 61.3 percent annual revenue growth. The AI cluster Ethernet optics market is tracking toward $26 billion in 2026, up 60 percent year over year, while the in-package optical I/O market is projected to grow at a 41.5 percent CAGR through 2032.
Marvell Technology is pursuing the same market through its acquisition of Celestial AI for up to $5.5 billion, announced in December 2025. Celestial AI's Photonic Fabric technology targets 16 Tbps optical solutions — ten times current 1.6 Tbps port capacity — and is projected to reach $1 billion in annual revenue by Q4 FY2029. The company aims to create a new $10 billion market segment.
Applied Optoelectronics is scaling its own capacity, announcing a $150 million expansion at its Sugar Land, Texas headquarters in October 2025. The project adds an 800 Gbps manufacturing line and a 210,000-square-foot facility expected online mid-2026, with plans to eventually produce 1.6 Tbps transceivers. AOI reported Q2 26 revenue of $191.92 million, up 86.4 percent year over year.
POET Technologies, a smaller photonics designer, secured a $50 million purchase order from Lumilens and holds roughly $796 million in cash after a $400 million May raise. The company expects to ship more than 30,000 optical engines in 2026. POET's partnerships with LITEON, Lessengers (a 1.6T module co-developer), and NationGate for Malaysian manufacturing provide commercial anchors for its growth plan.
Research from Edgeoptic shows that optimized transceiver-enabled architectures can reduce GPU idle time from over 30 percent to below 15 percent, directly improving compute utilization and lowering operational costs at scale. Government programs across the US, EU, China, Japan, and India are prioritizing AI-integrated optical communication as strategic digital infrastructure, funding deployment and expanding the addressable market.
Lumentum's key risk remains customer concentration — a small set of hyperscale buyers whose order decisions can swing results sharply. The company's narrative projects $12.7 billion revenue by 2029, but some analysts assume revenue could reach about $11.9 billion and earnings $4.5 billion by that year, highlighting how easily customer concentration and pricing pressure could undermine that path.
Lumentum shares rose 7.8 percent after the AI connectivity push and fresh analyst coverage. The stock carries a fair value estimate of $1,148 per share, implying roughly 28 percent upside to its current price, according to Simply Wall St analysis. The next proof point is how the NVIDIA-backed investment shows up in capacity additions, product mix, and margins in upcoming earnings and guidance updates across 2026 and 2027.
