Credit markets are repricing AI infrastructure debt at junk-bond levels, threatening the $750 billion financing loop powering the semiconductor buildout.
Nvidia's credit-default swaps posted their largest single-day jump since active trading began, as bond markets repriced the risk embedded in the circular financing model powering the AI chip boom. The five-year CDS rose about 14 basis points to roughly 82 bps on Monday, according to ICE Data Services — meaning investors must pay $82,000 annually to insure $10 million of Nvidia debt.
"Credit markets struggle to handle uncertainty, and the pace and cost of AI financing are deeply unpredictable — that's creating a serious confidence crisis," John Aylward, chief investment officer at Sona Asset Management, said.
Oracle's CDS climbed to 215 bps from 144 bps at the start of the year, after S&P Global Ratings cut its credit rating to BBB- — one notch above junk — following the company's plan to invest $70 billion in data centers over the next year. Alphabet's CDS hit a record 67 bps after the company posted its first negative free cash flow since going public more than two decades ago. Meta's $12 billion data center bond in Texas was priced near B- levels, equivalent to junk-grade debt, according to Sona Asset Management.
The repricing raises the cost of capital for the entire AI infrastructure ecosystem. If bond markets continue demanding higher yields for AI-related debt, it could choke off the capital spending that has driven Nvidia's revenue growth and, by extension, the broader semiconductor cycle. Nvidia shares fell 4.99 percent Monday, dropping its market capitalization to $4.75 trillion and ceding the world's largest company title to Apple, which rose to $4.95 trillion.
CDS Spikes Spread Beyond Nvidia to Hyperscalers
The credit market turmoil extended across the technology sector. Amazon, Meta, Broadcom and SpaceX all saw their CDS prices rise to record levels, according to LSEG data. Oracle's five-year CDS at 215 bps means insuring $10 million of its debt costs $215,000 annually — a 49 percent increase from the start of 2026.
"AI capital expenditure continues to outpace cash generation, pushing free cash flow for technology groups toward cyclical lows," Manish Kabra, head of US equity strategy at Societe Generale, said. "For hyperscale computing companies, the focus now is on CDS, not EPS."
The selloff cascaded into Asian semiconductor markets Tuesday. South Korea's KOSPI index fell as much as 8 percent, with SK Hynix dropping 11.1 percent and Samsung Electronics declining 9.5 percent. SK Hynix's US-listed shares closed at $143.02, below their $149 IPO price. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 2.23 percent, with Advanced Micro Devices and ASML each losing about 5 percent.
Han Ji-young, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, attributed the selloff to a combination of AI infrastructure financing risk, competition from low-cost Chinese open-source AI models such as Kimi K3, and the listing of Chinese memory chip maker CXMT.
The $750 Billion Guarantee Loop
At the center of the credit market's concern is a financing structure that critics call "circular." Nvidia is in discussions to provide about $250 billion in financing guarantees for OpenAI, helping the startup secure debt for a 10-gigawatt data center campus in Pike County, Ohio — a site that once operated as a uranium-enrichment plant, according to a person familiar with the talks. The companies are also discussing a separate $350 billion chip procurement financing arrangement. Combined with Nvidia's previously announced partnership with SK Group exceeding $500 billion, the chipmaker's potential AI infrastructure exposure surpasses $750 billion.
The structure works like this: Nvidia lends its credit rating to help AI startups raise debt, and those startups use the proceeds to buy Nvidia chips. Google has employed a similar model, guaranteeing about $35 billion in loans for Anthropic's data center leases across five locations.
"This opaque, off-balance-sheet, intercompany-driven financial alchemy is concerning and could lead to credit rating downgrades," Sal Naro, chief investment officer at Coherence Credit Strategies, said.
Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang has rejected the circular financing characterization. In January, when discussing Nvidia's investment in CoreWeave, he called the idea "absurd," arguing the investments generate returns beyond chip sales. Nvidia contributed $30 billion to OpenAI's record-breaking funding round in March, and Huang said it "might be the last time" the company invests in OpenAI before it goes public.
The bond market's message, however, is becoming harder to ignore. "The biggest question is whether this level of capital expenditure will grow permanently and when we'll see an inflection point back to positive cash flow," David Brown, co-head of investment-grade global at Neuberger Berman, said. "We won't have answers soon, and that explains the weakness."
For investors, the implications are clear. Nvidia shares trade at roughly 35 times forward earnings, a premium that depends on uninterrupted AI infrastructure spending. If credit markets continue to demand junk-level yields for AI data center debt, the cost of capital for the entire buildout rises — potentially cooling the demand that has made Nvidia the world's most valuable semiconductor company.
