Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) is bringing features previously reserved for flagship devices to the broader smartphone market with its new Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and 4 Gen 5 platforms, a move that sent its stock climbing and into technically overbought territory. The two new chips are aimed at improving gaming, performance, and AI capabilities in mid-range and budget handsets, a high-volume segment for the chipmaker. Devices using the new chips are expected from brands like Xiaomi, Honor, and OPPO in the second half of 2026.
"India continues to play a critical role for Qualcomm Technologies as one of the most dynamic mobile markets in the world," said Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Handsets at Qualcomm, highlighting the strategic importance of the launch.
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 delivers 21% better GPU performance and adds support for Wi-Fi 7, while the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 boosts GPU performance by a claimed 77% and brings 90-frames-per-second gaming to the 4-series for the first time. The 4 Gen 5 features two performance cores at up to 2.4GHz and supports 144Hz displays. The company did not disclose the specific process node for the new chips.
The launch is a strategic push to defend and expand market share in the crucial mid-range and entry-level smartphone markets, where competition is fierce. For investors, the positive stock reaction, which pushed the Relative Strength Index (RSI) into the early 80s, suggests optimism but also signals a potential for a near-term pullback. Since phones using the previous-generation chips often retail for under $300, these new platforms could significantly enhance the user experience in a large portion of the global smartphone market.
Flagship Features Trickle Down
The new chipsets are designed to deliver a smoother user experience across the board. Qualcomm's "Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI" technology is included in both platforms, which the company claims reduces screen stutter by 18% on the 6 Gen 5 and 25% on the 4 Gen 5. App launch speeds are also improved, by 20% and 43% respectively.
For gamers, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5's support for 90FPS gaming on FHD+ displays is a major upgrade for entry-level devices. The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 introduces the Qualcomm Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0, aimed at providing longer and smoother gaming sessions. The 6 Gen 5 will appear in upcoming phones from Honor and Redmi, while the 4 Gen 5 will power devices from OPPO, realme, and Redmi, broadening the availability of these enhanced features.
