The gaming blockchain Ronin (RON) has completed its migration from an independent sidechain to an Ethereum Layer 2, a move accompanied by an 89% reduction in the network's native token emissions.
The transition is described by the team as a "homecoming," shifting Ronin into the OP Stack ecosystem and leveraging Ethereum's security model—a strategic pivot following a nearly $625 million bridge exploit in 2022. "A chain with millions of users and a significant gaming ecosystem just decided that building on top of Ethereum was safer, smarter, and more sustainable than running alongside it," the project's documentation states.
With the migration, annual RON emissions have been cut from 45 million to 5 million, the lowest in the network's history, according to on-chain data. The marketplace treasury fee was also increased from 0.5% to 1.25%, directly linking treasury revenue to trading volume. Ronin's Total Value Locked (TVL) on the Ethereum network is approximately $13.25 million, according to data from DefiLlama.
The tokenomics overhaul replaces passive staking rewards with a "Proof of Distribution" model, designed to incentivize active ecosystem growth rather than passive holding. This structural shift, combined with the drastic supply cut, is a bet that long-term value will come from real network activity, a model that could create a supply shock for the RON token if demand increases. A prospective listing on a major U.S. exchange like Coinbase is seen as a potential future catalyst that could test this new economic model.
Ronin's move follows similar migrations by chains such as Base, Celo, and Fraxtal, which have also chosen to operate under Ethereum's security umbrella. For Ethereum, each migration adds to the demand for its blockspace and data availability layer, feeding into the base layer's fee and burn mechanics. Beyond its flagship game Axie Infinity, Ronin's ecosystem includes Pixels, Wild Forest, and other titles that now transact within Ethereum's security framework.
