The Syndicate (SYND) token fell 36.22% after a security exploit on its Commons bridge on the Base chain resulted in the theft of approximately 18.5 million tokens, worth $330,000 at the time of the incident.
"We have seen an exploit involving @syndicateio through a compromise of the Commons bridge," security firm CertiK said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. "This address acquired ~18.5M SYND and sold them for ~$330 K, which has been bridged to Ethereum."
The attack sent the SYND token’s price to a 24-hour low of $0.01882, according to CoinGecko data. The token’s daily trading range expanded significantly, stretching from $0.01882 to $0.03427, while 24-hour trading volume reached $3,151,942, reflecting intense selling activity. The price at the time of writing was $0.02174.
The exploit immediately raises concerns about the security of cross-chain bridges and is likely to damage user confidence in the Syndicate protocol. While the stolen funds were moved to the Ethereum mainnet, Syndicate has publicly stated it has enough reserves to make affected users whole, though a specific timeline for reimbursement has not been disclosed.
How the Attack Unfolded
The incident began when an attacker exploited a privileged upgrade vulnerability in the Commons bridge smart contract. This allowed them to gain control and drain the 18.5 million SYND tokens.
The stolen tokens were quickly swapped for Ether (ETH) on Aerodrome, a decentralized exchange operating on the Base blockchain. From there, the attacker bridged the proceeds to the Ethereum network, a common tactic used to obscure the trail of stolen funds and make recovery more difficult. Both PeckShield and CertiK, blockchain security monitoring firms, publicly flagged the transaction and the attacker's wallet address.
Syndicate's Response and Recovery Plan
Syndicate’s team first acknowledged unusual token movements in a post on X, advising users to halt liquidity-related activities. Shortly after, the project confirmed the direct compromise of the bridge and froze all activity to prevent further losses.
"We are investigating a compromise of the Commons bridge," the team stated. "We are tracing the attack and engaging with security firms. We are also looking at options to make people whole. Syndicate has sufficient tokens available to help users who have lost SYND."
The project has not yet provided a detailed timeline for the user compensation process but has reassured the community that it is a top priority.
