Oil's rally above $80 a barrel is boosting demand for drilling and offshore services, benefiting Patterson-UTI Energy and TechnipFMC as upstream spending accelerates.
WTI crude traded above $80 a barrel as U.S.-Iran tensions escalated, lifting the energy sector 30.6% over the past year and creating a supportive backdrop for oilfield service providers tied to exploration and production activity.
"The sustained crude price above $80 is driving a meaningful uptick in upstream spending, which directly benefits service companies linked to drilling and completion work," said Omar Tariq, energy analyst at Edgen.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration projects WTI to average $76.26 a barrel this year, a level that remains well above the breakeven costs for most domestic producers. Patterson-UTI Energy, which provides drilling and completion services to upstream operators, has gained 53.6% over the past 12 months. TechnipFMC, a provider of subsea and surface technologies for offshore and onshore operations, has also benefited from the elevated price environment. Both stocks carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). The broader oil-energy space has outperformed the S&P 500, which rose 21% over the same period.
With the U.S.-Iran conflict showing no signs of de-escalation and global supply remaining constrained, oil prices are likely to stay elevated, sustaining demand for the services that companies like PTEN and FTI provide. The last time WTI sustained a level above $80 for a comparable stretch — during the 2022 post-Ukraine invasion period — the U.S. rig count rose 28% over six months before peaking at 784 rigs in November 2022, according to Baker Hughes data. The key downside risk is a diplomatic resolution that could send crude below $70, compressing upstream activity and reducing service demand.
Patterson-UTI Rides the Drilling Cycle
Patterson-UTI is positioned to capture demand from operators ramping up drilling programs. The company's completion and drilling services are directly tied to the number of active rigs, which tends to rise when crude prices exceed operators' break-even thresholds. With many U.S. producers break-even below $50 a barrel, the current price environment provides ample incentive to expand activity. The company's Zacks Rank #2 reflects positive earnings estimate revisions, a signal that analysts expect the favorable backdrop to persist.
TechnipFMC Benefits From Offshore Resurgence
TechnipFMC's subsea technologies are benefiting from a broader offshore revival, as operators seek to develop deepwater projects that were shelved during the 2020 downturn. Offshore projects typically require multiyear commitments and higher upfront capital, making them sensitive to sustained price signals. With WTI above $80, the economics of deepwater developments improve significantly, supporting demand for FTI's equipment and installation services. The company's Surface Technologies segment also provides exposure to onshore activity, giving it a diversified revenue base across both domains.
The rally in energy stocks has made bargain opportunities harder to find, but both PTEN and FTI remain attractively valued relative to the broader sector. Halliburton, another large-cap oilfield service player, trades at a trailing EV/EBITDA of 8.40 times, below the industry average of 8.85 times, suggesting the sector has not yet priced in the full benefit of sustained high oil prices.
