Chinese technology giant Xiaomi has hired a former general manager from Tesla’s China operations, Kong Yanshuang, to spearhead its new electric vehicle sales division, a direct challenge to the US automaker’s dominance in the world's largest car market.
The appointment, reported by local outlet Jiemian, places Kong in charge of sales for Xiaomi's much-anticipated automotive venture, replacing former director Li Xiaorui.
Kong’s experience at Tesla, a leader in China’s premium EV segment, provides Xiaomi with valuable insight into go-to-market strategies and sales network development. This high-profile hire is a key move for Xiaomi as it prepares to launch its first vehicle, the SU7, in a market defined by intense price competition from rivals like BYD and Nio.
The move intensifies the talent war in China's EV sector and underscores Xiaomi's multibillion-dollar commitment to breaking into the industry. For Tesla, the departure of a seasoned executive to a direct competitor could pose a near-term risk to its market share and growth trajectory in the region as Xiaomi leverages its vast consumer electronics user base to drive car sales.
Xiaomi's entry is expected to further pressure margins across the industry, which has been grappling with a persistent price war. The company's ability to integrate its popular smartphone and ecosystem products with its new vehicle will be a critical factor for its success.
