Xiaomi is expanding its electric vehicle ambitions with the YU7 GT, a high-performance SUV aimed squarely at the premium segment, set to launch by the end of May. With a dual-motor setup producing around 1003 PS, the new model challenges established players in the performance SUV market, signaling the company’s intent to compete on speed and luxury, not just price.
In a statement, Xiaomi Auto clarified the model's positioning, emphasizing that the “GT” designation stands for “Gran Turismo,” a vehicle designed for high-speed, long-distance travel with an emphasis on comfort. “Unlike the SU7 Ultra, it does not pursue extreme track-focused performance,” the company said. “Instead, it strikes a balance among high performance, luxury comfort and long driving range as a pure-blooded GT.”
The YU7 GT boasts a top speed of up to 300 km/h and is powered by a ternary lithium-ion battery that delivers a claimed range of up to 705 km under CLTC standards. The vehicle’s chassis dynamics were jointly tuned by Chinese and European experts at Germany’s Nürburgring, reinforcing its grand touring credentials with a focus on stable, high-speed cruising rather than raw lap times.
The launch represents a critical test for Xiaomi’s costly EV venture. The YU7 GT enters a crowded field of performance electric SUVs, and its success will depend on whether the company can convince premium buyers that its technology and luxury credentials can compete with entrenched brands. The vehicle's performance metrics place it in a competitive position, but market acceptance will be key to validating Xiaomi's significant investment in the automotive sector.
The design of the YU7 GT is both aerodynamic and aggressive, featuring the company’s signature water droplet headlights and a rear ducktail spoiler to enhance stability at speed. This focus on “luxury travel,” as the company puts it, aims to embed comfort into every detail of the driving experience, from the ride quality to the interior appointments. By carving out a niche between pure track machines and standard SUVs, Xiaomi hopes the YU7 GT will attract a new class of driver who demands both thrilling performance and everyday practicality.
