"The transition from zcashd to Zebra and Zakura modernizes the node ecosystem while reducing long-term operational risk," the Zcash development team said in a statement. The Rust-based Zebra client launched in 2024, giving node operators more than a year to migrate before the July 18 end-of-support deadline.
Network activity held steady through the transition. Shielded balances declined 14% to 4.42 million ZEC, but private transactions rose 11.1% quarter-over-quarter to 131,584, according to on-chain data. The anonymity set expanded by 325,127 units to 124.08 million, signaling broader participation in Zcash's privacy pools. Average daily trading volume climbed 33.8% QoQ to $373 million.
The Ironwood upgrade (NU6.3), activating at block 3,428,143 around July 28, introduces a turnstile mechanism that caps withdrawals from the Orchard shielded pool. This follows a May 29 discovery by Shielded Labs researcher Taylor Hornby of a soundness bug in Orchard's proof circuit that had been live since May 2022. Developers deployed an emergency fix by June 2 and restored the pool via the NU6.2 hard fork on June 3. The turnstile prevents any counterfeit ZEC created during the four-year window from exiting the pool into circulating supply.
Formal verification strengthens protocol integrity
Beyond the turnstile, Ironwood incorporates formal mathematical proofs designed to verify the upgrade removes the vulnerability without introducing new security risks. Project Tachyon, led by Zcash founding cryptographer Sean Bowe, is developing recursive proofs that could eventually shrink consensus data requirements from 100 megabytes per second to 500 kilobytes, the team said in a blog post.
The Zakura node, a pruned fork of Zebra maintained by Bowe and Osmosis cofounder Dev Ojha, supports Ironwood from launch and offers a compatibility mode that reproduces the zcashd interface for wallets and exchange integrations. The node can sync from a ready-made 11-gigabyte snapshot in under two minutes, roughly 680 times faster than a full chain download, according to the team.
ZEC traded at $552 as of July 20, up 16% over the past seven days, according to CoinGecko data. The rally has been supported by rising derivatives activity, with open interest in Zcash futures rebounding above $750 million.
The Ironwood activation on July 28 will test whether the network's privacy infrastructure can sustain user confidence after the Orchard vulnerability. With quantum-resistant cryptography and formal verification now part of the roadmap, Zcash is positioning its shielded pools as a long-term solution for private transactions — provided the turnstile holds and the proofs check out.
