AMD Commits Up to $250M for AI Platform Development
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has entered into a multi-year partnership with cloud-computing firm Nutanix to build an infrastructure platform designed for agentic AI applications. As part of the agreement, AMD will make a direct $150 million equity investment by purchasing Nutanix stock. The chipmaker will also provide up to $100 million to fund the joint engineering initiatives.
This strategic investment follows AMD's recent deal to supply Meta Platforms with computing power, and it signals AMD's strategy of not only being a key supplier but also an investor in its growing AI ecosystem. The collaboration aims to combine AMD's hardware expertise with Nutanix's cloud software to create a tightly integrated solution for enterprises deploying advanced AI.
Nutanix Stock Surges 21% on Partnership and Earnings Beat
The market responded decisively to the announcement, sending Nutanix (NTNX) stock up 21% in premarket trading on Thursday. The rally was also supported by the company's fourth-quarter earnings report, released Wednesday, which surpassed analyst expectations for both profit and revenue. In contrast, AMD shares pointed 0.7% lower in premarket trading, a modest pullback after climbing 9% earlier in the week on its Meta partnership news.
Analysts See Increased AI Relevance and M&A Potential
The AMD deal significantly enhances Nutanix's strategic position, according to market analysts. KeyBanc analyst Brandon Nispel maintained an Overweight rating on the stock with a $65 price target, stating he “would be buying Nutanix as AMD investment likely sparks renewed enthusiasm.” Analysts at RBC Capital Markets echoed this sentiment, noting the partnership “likely increases [Nutanix’s] AI relevance and signifies the potential importance of [the company] from an M&A perspective.” While RBC's Matthew Hedberg highlighted that healthy demand is currently tempered by supply-chain constraints causing longer lead times, the overall outlook for Nutanix's role in the AI infrastructure market has grown considerably more bullish.
