Three crypto exploits targeting cross-chain infrastructure drained $36M on July 23, with the Verus Ethereum bridge accounting for $8M of the losses.
"Attackers exploited a vulnerability in the bridge import path to trigger unauthorized payouts," a security researcher familiar with the Verus incident said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing investigation.
The B² Network staking contract was also among the affected protocols, according to on-chain data. The Verus bridge attack alone represented $8M in losses, with the remaining $28M spread across the other exploits. The incidents underscore persistent risks in cross-chain bridge design and smart contract management.
Bridge exploits have historically triggered cascading sell pressure across DeFi tokens as liquidity providers withdraw funds. Despite the security events, prediction markets showed Bitcoin holding above $54,000 with 99.9 percent probability as of July 23, suggesting the broader market has not yet priced in systemic contagion risk.
The three incidents targeted different protocols but shared a common vector: vulnerabilities in cross-chain communication layers. The Verus bridge exploit used a flaw in how the protocol validated incoming transactions from the Ethereum side, allowing the attacker to mint unbacked assets on the destination chain.
The B² Network staking contract exploit followed a similar pattern, though the exact mechanism remains under investigation by the project's security team. Combined, the three attacks represent one of the largest single-day exploit totals in 2026.
For DeFi protocols, the incidents reinforce a pattern seen throughout 2025 and 2026: cross-chain bridges remain the most targeted infrastructure in the ecosystem. According to DefiLlama data, total value locked across all bridges has declined 12 percent year-to-date as security concerns persist.
Bitcoin's resilience above $54,000 suggests institutional flows via ETF products remain disconnected from DeFi-specific risk events. However, if any of the affected protocols' native tokens see sustained selling, the contagion could spread to broader DeFi markets.
