Bitcoin's reclaim of its 200-day moving average after 270 days below the level marks the strongest technical signal since the cryptocurrency's June breakdown.
Bitcoin climbed 5.8% to $68,580 Wednesday, reclaiming its 200-day moving average after 270 days below as the August range breakout extended.
Michael Boutros, senior technical strategist at FOREX.com, said the advance is approaching initial resistance at the February low-week and low-day closes at $70,283/531, where a breach or weekly close above is needed to suggest a more significant low is in place.
BTC touched an intraday high of $69,749, its strongest print since June 2, before easing to trade near $68,580. The move extends a rally of more than 20% from the yearly low, with the breakout from the August opening range already extending more than 11.6% off the monthly low. The cryptocurrency also cleared its 100-day moving average, according to Seeking Alpha data.
The next technical hurdle sits at $70,283/531, where multiple trendline slopes converge. A close above $71,402 — the 100% extension of the July advance — would fuel the next major leg of the recovery, while a break below $65,416 would invalidate the breakout. Subsequent resistance is eyed at $74,434-76,159, the 2025 low and low-close zone.
Support structure holds the breakout
Initial support rests with the July high-day close at $66,519, backed by the August opening range high at $65,416. Losses below $65,416 would invalidate Wednesday's breakout, while a break and daily close below the monthly open at $62,818 would mark resumption of the broader downtrend. The yearly low-day close sits at $59,963.
Boutros noted that Bitcoin fell more than 7% from the July high, registering an intraday low at $62,217 before rebounding into the monthly open. The recovery has been driven by stabilization above the August breakout zone, with the upper parallel of the May downtrend converging on the $74,434-76,159 resistance zone into early September.
The 200-day moving average reclaim carries weight for momentum traders and systematic strategies that use the level as a trend filter. Bitcoin spent 270 consecutive days below the average, the longest stretch since the 2022 bear market, according to CryptoBriefing. The reclaim signals a potential shift from bearish to constructive phases for the leading cryptocurrency.
The broader crypto market has followed Bitcoin's lead, with Ethereum holding above $1,900 and adding 1.13% over the past day, according to CoinMarketCap data. Bitcoin's market capitalization stood near $1.27 trillion, with 24-hour trading volume reaching $11.59 billion as of 18:30 UTC.
