A 40x leveraged short on Dogecoin at $0.0710 is testing a support zone the memecoin has defended for two months, while bullish positioning data suggests the trade could backfire.
A trader opened a 40x short on Dogecoin at $0.0710, pressing a support level the memecoin has held for two months.
CoinGlass data shows DOGE's 24-hour long/short ratio climbed to a multi-month high of 1.18, with traders still leaning heavily toward the long side.
The position follows a 28% correction in June that broke four months of consolidation near $0.0800 and pushed DOGE to a more than two-year low. The DOGE/BTC ratio is set to close August with another lower low, showing little rotation back into the memecoin.
Memecoin trading volume rose 22% over the past 24 hours while AI token volume fell 11%, and DOGE dominance slipped below 0.5% for the first time since the 2020-21 cycle. If those trends hold, the short could trigger a squeeze toward $0.0750.
Short leverage stacks against a two-month base
The 40x position, with liquidation near $0.0700 and more than 40% in profit, adds pressure to a zone DOGE has defended since June. The setup mirrors the June breakdown, when a 28% correction after four months near $0.0800 triggered long squeezes and pushed the token to a more than two-year low as capitulation intensified. Against that backdrop, the rising short leverage looks strategic, especially with the $0.0700 support now under pressure.
Memecoin flows point to a bear trap
The bullish long/short ratio does not look random. DOGE has chopped in a tight range for over two months, its dominance is back at levels last seen in the 2020-21 cycle, and capital continues to rotate into memecoins. If these trends hold, the setup could turn into a bear trap, making the 40x short a high-risk bet. A short squeeze could send DOGE toward $0.0750 once the broader market shifts back into risk-on mode.
