A disclosed flaw in Tether's systems puts $91 billion of USDT at risk of theft, and whether the issuer contains it will shape confidence in stablecoins and the wider crypto market.

A security vulnerability in Tether's infrastructure could expose $91 billion in USDT to hackers, threatening a liquidity crisis across the stablecoin market, according to a Sept. 7 report.
The disclosure, published by Crypto Briefing, frames the exposure as a disclosed infrastructure risk rather than a confirmed intrusion, leaving the outcome to hinge on whether Tether can contain the flaw before any funds are moved. USDT is the largest stablecoin by circulating supply, and the token underpins trading and lending across centralized exchanges and DeFi protocols on Ethereum and other chains.
A successful breach would likely trigger a run on the token, forcing widespread de-pegging as holders rush to redeem and draining liquidity from the trading pairs and collateral markets that depend on it. Protocols that accept USDT as collateral would face immediate stress, while exchanges listing the token would confront a wave of redemption requests against reserves that Tether has not published in full detail.
Even a contained fix carries consequences. The report lands as regulators in the U.S. and Europe push stablecoin issuers toward fuller reserve transparency, and a security lapse at the sector's dominant issuer strengthens the case for stricter oversight. Circle's USDC, the main rival, stands to capture flows if confidence in USDT erodes, though a disorderly unwind would pressure both tokens and the settlement infrastructure they share.
The episode tests whether the crypto market can absorb a security scare at its most systemically important issuer without a broader repricing. For traders, the near-term watch is whether Tether issues a remediation statement and whether USDT holds its $1 peg on major venues through the coming sessions.
