Smart-money wallets accumulated EIGEN tokens at the fastest rate since the transfer unlock, while the protocol's total value locked tells a more cautious story.
EigenLayer whale transactions and new wallet creation rose after the EIGEN token transfer unlock on June 21, as sophisticated investors accumulated tokens early.
Andreessen Horowitz's crypto arm invested an additional $70 million into EIGEN tokens in June 2025, on top of a $100 million Series B commitment, according to the firm's disclosures. The $170 million total reflects conviction in EigenLayer's multi-year trajectory.
Total value locked on EigenLayer has fallen to $4.72 billion from a peak above $15 billion, a decline of roughly 69 percent. The protocol still controls about 94 percent of Ethereum's restaking market. Derivatives open interest in EIGEN climbed 27 percent in the week through mid-July, Coinglass data shows. EIGEN tokens posted double-digit rebounds during that period.
The divergence between whale accumulation and falling TVL creates a binary setup for traders. If EigenCloud, the protocol's verifiable computing platform, delivers on its roadmap, the leveraged positioning could fuel a sharp rally. If it disappoints, the same leverage amplifies downside risk. Traders are watching whether new wallet creation sustains and whether TVL stabilizes in the coming weeks.
EigenLayer has been the dominant force in Ethereum's restaking sector, at one point controlling roughly 94 percent of the market. The protocol allows users to restake ETH through liquid staking tokens to secure third-party networks, earning additional yields. The Eigen Foundation unlocked EIGEN token transferability on June 21, which opened the door for large-holder movements that can now be tracked on-chain.
The a16z investment adds weight to the accumulation narrative. The venture firm's $170 million total commitment across two rounds makes it one of the largest institutional backers of a restaking protocol. Other major crypto venture firms have also allocated capital to the sector, though EigenLayer remains the dominant player by market share.
The whale activity comes as EigenLayer evolves beyond its original restaking pitch. The protocol now positions itself as a layer for verifiable computing through EigenCloud, a platform that could expand its addressable market beyond securing third-party networks. Whether that expansion reverses the TVL decline will determine if the current accumulation phase precedes a sustained rally or a liquidation event.
