New Zealand's a2 Milk Company has recalled three batches of its a2 Platinum infant formula in the US after testing detected cereulide, a toxin that can cause vomiting.
"The recall was initiated by a2MC after cereulide was detected through additional testing of the Product conducted in response to new guidance issued by New Zealand's food regulatory authority," the company said in a statement.
The recall affects 63,078 units across three batch numbers, of which an estimated 16,428 were sold. The product, a2 Platinum Premium infant formula 0-12 months, was sold via the company's website, Amazon, and Meijer stores. The specific batch numbers are 2210269454, 2210324609, and 2210321712.
While no illnesses have been reported, the recall of a product imported under Operation Fly Formula could attract regulatory scrutiny and damage consumer confidence. The US Food and Drug Administration is aware of the recall.
Cereulide is a heat-stable toxin, meaning it is not destroyed by preparing the formula with hot water. Symptoms of ingestion, which can appear within 30 minutes, include nausea and vomiting. Infants are particularly vulnerable due to their developing immune systems.
The company has advised consumers to stop using the product and dispose of it or return it for a refund. The probable source of the toxin is an ingredient in the product, a2 Milk said.
The recall highlights the ongoing challenges and heightened scrutiny within the infant formula market, particularly for products imported to address domestic shortages. Consumers and regulators will be closely watching for the results of the investigation into the source of the contamination.
