Apple Inc. faces a critical antitrust hearing in India on May 21, a move that could force significant changes to its lucrative App Store business model in one of its fastest-growing markets.

India’s competition regulator has scheduled the final hearing in a long-running antitrust case against Apple for May 21, setting the stage for a landmark decision on the company's App Store practices. The case, which examines allegations of anti-competitive behavior, represents a significant regulatory challenge for the technology giant in a market of 1.4 billion people.
According to a regulatory order, the date was set after Apple reportedly did not contest the findings of an investigation by the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The order also noted that the Cupertino, California-based company had not submitted certain financial data requested by the regulator, a move that could be interpreted as a procedural concession.
The CCI's investigation centers on complaints that Apple's mandatory in-app purchase system, which requires developers to use its proprietary payment method and pay commissions of up to 30 percent, constitutes an abuse of its dominant market position. This issue mirrors legal and regulatory challenges Apple faces globally, including from rival Alphabet Inc.'s Google, which has also faced scrutiny in India over its Play Store billing policies.
The outcome of the May 21 hearing carries substantial weight for Apple. An unfavorable ruling could result in multi-billion dollar fines and, more importantly, force the company to allow alternative payment systems within its Indian App Store. Such a change would directly threaten its high-margin services revenue, which stood at over $23 billion globally in the last quarter, and could set a powerful precedent for other jurisdictions currently examining the company's control over its digital ecosystem.
