Cameco suspended operations at its Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan after Orano's McClean Lake mill shut down due to a sulfuric acid plant failure.
"Orano is currently working to bring the acid plant back online and is assessing options," Cameco said in a statement July 1.
The McClean Lake mill processes ore from Cigar Lake, one of the world's largest and highest-grade uranium mines, under a long-term toll-milling agreement. The acid plant failure forced the mill to halt operations, disrupting the processing chain for Cigar Lake's output and triggering the mine suspension.
The duration of the outage and its production impact have not been disclosed. Cameco said it will provide further updates as information becomes available. The suspension adds to supply-side uncertainty in the uranium market, where Cameco and Kazakhstan's Kazatomprom are the two largest producers globally. Cigar Lake is the company's flagship asset in the Athabasca Basin, a region that accounts for a significant share of global uranium output.
