Key Takeaways:
EigenCloud, the restaking protocol formerly known as EigenLayer, releases 39,488,745 EIGEN from lock-up on Sept 1 at 00:00 UTC, equal to 4.49 percent of the 878.7 million tokens in circulation and worth roughly $7.66 million at the Aug 29 price of $0.194073, according to CoinGecko data.
The tranche is the next instalment of a fixed monthly series that began in October 2025 and runs through October 2027, following a one-year cliff after EIGEN became transferable on Sept 30, 2024, per the Eigen Foundation's token documentation. The entire September release goes to two insider groups — investors and early contributors — with no community share, no airdrop and no distribution to restakers.
The emissions model at DefiLlama splits the tranche into 20,189,050 EIGEN for investors and 19,299,695 EIGEN for early contributors. The investor line reproduces the four-percent monthly rule almost exactly — 4 percent of the 504.73 million investor allocation is 20,189,200 — while the early-contributor figure deviates from the 18.34 million that the same rule applied to the 458.55 million allocation would imply, a discrepancy the foundation has not explained publicly.
The unlock raises possible supply, not actual selling: whether backers move tokens to an exchange or hold them is unknown and cannot be read from the calendar. The tranche equals roughly 46 percent of EIGEN's $16.69 million 24-hour trading volume, a quantity the market can absorb if spread out but one that gets noticed if it arrives at once. On top of the monthly instalment, a further 1,287,421 EIGEN arrive weekly from emissions, bringing September's total releases to 44,638,427 EIGEN, about 5 percent of today's circulating supply.
After Sept 1, 14 monthly releases are still outstanding, with the series ending Oct 1, 2027. The tranches are shrinking slowly — Oct 1 brings 39,024,930 EIGEN, Nov 1 brings 37,825,418 and Dec 1 brings 36,794,832 — because the falling early-contributor line overlays a constant investor line. Around 12 percent of the investor allocation and 14 percent of the early-contributor allocation have been released so far; at the end of the series, backers will hold roughly 25.7 percent and early staff 23.4 percent of the supply existing at that point.
The gap between circulating supply and total supply shows how much dilution remains outstanding. Total supply stands at 1,837,770,172 EIGEN, more than double the circulating figure, against an initial total supply of 1,673,646,668 EIGEN. Fully diluted valuation of $356.75 million versus a market cap of $170.58 million means slightly more than half of the tokens that exist are not yet in circulation.
The two most recent unlock dates offer a modest but usable read on market reaction, per CoinGecko's price history. Before the July 1 release, EIGEN fell just under 7 percent from $0.2178 on June 30 to $0.2026 on the unlock day, then recovered to $0.2493 by July 9. Before the Aug 1 release, the token slipped 2.6 percent from $0.1831 to $0.1783, though the larger part of that month's decline — roughly a quarter from the July 17 high of $0.2466 — had already occurred before the release date. EIGEN traded at $0.1943 on Aug 29, about 8 percent above its level 30 days earlier.
Two data points do not make a rule, and anyone turning a calendar entry into a price target has claimed more than the data supports. The unlock is a scheduled property of holding EIGEN rather than a one-off event: on the first of every month through October 2027, insider supply can reach the market. For holders, no action is required on Sept 1 — the lock-up applies only to backers and early staff, not to exchange balances, self-custodied tokens or restaking positions, which run on a separate schedule.
