Key Takeaways: Eigencloud holds $6.5 billion in deposits yet its native token trades 96% below its all-time high — a paradox playing out in real time.

Kraken deposited 50,600 ether, worth about $107 million, into Eigencloud, the largest Ethereum restaking protocol, on May 26.
The deposit was detected by on-chain analyst EmberCN and confirmed via Etherscan, adding to a pattern of institutional engagement with restaking infrastructure even as the sector's native tokens have underperformed.
Eigencloud holds $6.54 billion in total value locked on Ethereum, the most of any restaking protocol, according to DefiLlama. Its native token EIGEN trades at $0.25, down 95.6% from its all-time high of $5.65. The protocol distributes $56.77 million in annualized incentives to stakers and operators while generating just $13.6 million in fee revenue, leaving a net deficit of about $12.7 million per year.
The gap between TVL strength and token performance highlights a structural challenge for restaking: protocols must prove that actively validated services generate enough fee revenue to justify the incentive spend required to secure them. Eigencloud raised $220 million in total funding, including a $50 million Series A from a16z Crypto, giving it runway to weather the imbalance — but with EIGEN near multi-year lows, market skepticism remains.
The restaking sector has undergone a significant contraction since its peak. Total value locked across all restaking protocols fell to about $11 billion from $31 billion in August 2024, according to on-chain data. Eigencloud's own TVL declined to $5.5 billion from $22 billion over the same period, a drop of 75%.
Kraken's deposit appears driven by ETH-denominated restaking yield rather than token speculation. As a major U.S.-based exchange, Kraken likely deposited on behalf of clients seeking staking and restaking returns on their ether holdings. The exchange has not publicly commented on the transaction.
The Incentive-Revenue Gap
Eigencloud's annualized incentive spend of $56.77 million far exceeds its $13.6 million in fee revenue, a dynamic common among early-stage DeFi protocols but one that puts sustained pressure on the token. Token holders absorb dilutive emissions without a corresponding fee offset to support price. The protocol's $220 million funding runway provides a buffer, but the math remains a concern for long-term sustainability.
What's Next for Restaking
The restaking sector faces a critical test as it attempts to demonstrate that AVSs can generate sufficient fee revenue. Eigencloud commands $6.6 billion of the $11.3 billion total restaking market, giving it the largest platform to make that case. Kraken's deposit shows institutional interest in the yield proposition, but the token's 96% decline suggests the market is not yet convinced.
